                                               THE GIFTS

I was sitting with my immediate family in the lawyer’s office for the reading of my uncle Jake’s will. The whole thing seemed so boring to a twelve year old boy like me until the lawyer said uncle Jake had left me something. I excitedly asked what it was. The lawyer handed me a small wooden box. I quickly opened the lid, hoping to see my uncle’s war medals, or maybe his baseball cards. But what’s this? It’s a piece of crystal, a pine cone, & a peculiar looking doll of some sort. Kinda like a rag doll, but it seems to be made of grass & twigs.

When we got home, I put my inheritance on the shelf in my bedroom closet & went about doing the things young boys do. Baseball, climbing trees, & so on. When I came in for supper, I overheard my parents talking about the strange things I had inherited from my uncle. Mom tell my dad “Maybe he thought they were valuable. You know his mind has been going for awhile now” Uncle Jake had been disappearing and then coming back hours, & sometimes days, later with stories of visiting his friends in the woods. “Maybe if I could find these friends, they could help me understand why uncle Jake left me these strange things” I thought to myself.

I couldn’t sleep that night & the next morning I decided to try to find these friends of uncle Jake. So I set out with a couple sandwiches and a thermos of  milk. About an hour into my journey, I heard a strange noise. I couldn’t see where it was coming from, so I decided to climb a big ‘ol oak tree to get a better look at what lay ahead. I still couldn’t see what or who made the strange noise I heard, so I decided to climb down. I heard the unmistakable sound of a limb cracking under my foot and the next thing I knew, I was on the ground in a lot of pain. I had broken my leg. I crawled over to a stick and struggled to my feet by using it as a crutch. I kept going until I just had to stop & rest. I ate my sandwiches & drank my milk, then I must’ve drifted off to sleep.

When I woke up, I was in a completely different place. As I rubbed the sleep from my eyes, I noticed two small “people” I guess they were people anyway. They looked like people except they had hair all over their bodies & didn’t wear any clothes. I didn’t feel scared at all for some reason. Then I saw a third one of these “people” sitting by itself playing with something. “Could it be?” I wondered. “It is! It’s a doll like Uncle Jake left me” That’s when I began to realize what was going on. These were Uncle Jake’s friends. He wasn’t crazy after all and he left me these gifts because he knew that deep down, I always believed his stories about his friends in the woods. After a couple hours, the people suddenly left me alone. I didn’t understand why until a short time later when my dad came and rescued me. I never told anyone about these strange but gentle people of the woods. It’s enough that I know they are there.
